The Red Sea region is witnessing heightened tensions as the Houthis, backed by Iran, have launched attacks on U.S. warships, escalating conflicts. The U.S. has responded with airstrikes targeting Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen. Meanwhile, U.S.-Iran relations also remain strained.

Recently, a video allegedly US Navy destroying and sinking Iranian warship in Red Sea is being shared among social media users.

The X post mentions: 

“BREAKING: US Navy Destroys & Sinks Iranian Warship in Red Sea After Houthi Attack!”

However, Fact Crescendo’s findings show that the video is a combination of two different clips. The first part depicts a 2021 incident of tense stand-off between Iranian Warships and US Navy vessels in the Persian Gulf. The second part shows footage of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

Fact Check:

We applied Google reverse search on the key fragments of the shared video and foud that the shared video has been created by combining two different videos. 

The Google reverse image search led us to a youtube channel  named On Demand News. First footage was published by On Demand News on 27 April 2021. 

According to the Caption of the video, it depicted ‘Iranian Warships SWARM US Navy Vessels During Tense Stand-Off in Persian Gulf’. A video released by the US Navy showed a tense encounter between a ship commanded by Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard and the Coast Guard patrol boat USCGC Monomoy on April 2.

The video caption further added that According to the Navy, during the encounter, the Iranian vessel cut in front of the Monomoy, forcing the ship to make “defensive” manoeuvres to avoid a collision.

The second part of the video is from deepwater horizon oil spill, largest marine oil spill in history. On April 20, 2010, the oil drilling rig Deepwater Horizon, operating in the Macondo Prospect in the Gulf of Mexico, exploded and sank resulting in the death of 11 workers on the Deepwater Horizon.

Conclusion

Hence from the above investigation, it is now clear that the video being shared on social media with the claims of Iranian Ship destroyed and sunk by US Navy is actually a combination of two different clips. The first clip depicts a 2021 incident of tense stand-off between Iranian Warships and US Navy vessels in the Persian Gulf and The second part shows footage of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
