Based on published reports, the epicenter of this earthquake was in Jorm district of Badakhshan province, and its tremors were also felt in Pakistan, Tajikistan and India.
Following this, a number of media and social media users have also published a picture at the same time as the news was published. In this picture, a dilapidated multi-story building can be seen at night. The users claimed this the image of the ruins of the earthquake in Afghanistan.

In the description of the photo, it is stated: “All agencies of the Emirate and emergency services are currently dedicated in providing every assistance possible in earthquake rescue and recovery efforts”.
However, we found that an old image of a building that was destroyed by the earthquake in Iran and Iraq was republished as an image of the ruins of the earthquake in Afghanistan.
Fact Check
We did a reverse image search on the viral image, found that the image is old, and was published as early as 2017.
When we further investigated, we found that this image is from the 2017 earthquake that occurred at the border points between Iran and Iraq. According to the news reports, the intensity of this earthquake was 7.3 Richter and more than hundreds of people died as a result.
