Recently, an image has been circulating on social media, with users claiming that it shows a man who was hanged in Iran for opposing the Islamic regime and advocating for women’s rights. You can see some X posts claiming that the viral photo shows an Iranian women’s rights activist being publicly executed as his daughter watches on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, when we investigated the claims, we found that the images are being shared with an inaccurate narrative. Here’s the actual context of this image.

Fact Check<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We began our investigation by using Google Reverse Image Search on the shared image and discovered that it dates back to 2007. We found a BBC News article published on August 2, 2007, which states that the man in the image, identified as Majid Kavousifar, along with his nephew, was executed for the murder of an Iranian judge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As per the report, Majid and his nephew Hossein had murdered a judge at the same place where they were hanged. A large image of the deceased judge was displayed in the background when these two were executed. The report says, ‘When Hossein Kavousifar looked distressed as he awaited his execution, his uncle gestured to him and smiled in an attempt to reassure him<\/em>.’ It is probably during this time the image was captured. Thus, Majid was not looking at any girl in the crowd but was trying reassure his distressed nephew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, no media reports mentioned about Majid’s daughter witnessing his execution. However, the Reuters had published the girl’s image with caption:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“A girl attends the hanging of Majid Kavousifar and Hossein Kavousifar in Tehran August 2, 2007. Iran hanged Majid and Hossein, the killers of a judge who had jailed several reformist dissidents, before a crowd of hundreds of people on Thursday.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reports do not indicate that the girl was related to Majid or his family. It is possible she was simply a bystander who witnessed the execution of Majid and Hossein. Therefore, it remains unclear whether the girl had any connection to Majid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fact Crescendo found that the claims made along with the image of Majid Kavousifar being executed are misleading. He was convicted and executed for the murder of a Judge and not for advocating for Women’s rights in Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
