Images of a submerged wreckage of an airplane are being shared widely on social media as the wreckage of MH-370, the Malaysian Airline plane that mysteriously disappeared in 2014. The mystery of MH-370 continues to be one of the biggest unsolved mysteries of the last decade. Hence, the news of discovery of its remains went viral in no time. The caption of the tweet reads, “Malaysia Airplane MH370 that disappeared 9 years ago has been found under ocean with no human skeleton. The plane had 239 passengers on board.”

The same image was shared along with some other images and the same caption. You can see one such post below.

However, these images are not of the wreckage of MH-370. These are the images of an airplane submerged in Jordan. Here is the fact check.

Fact Check

We saw many users on Twitter commenting that this is not MH-370 but Lockheed L-1011 Tristar submerged underwater in Aqaba in Jordan. This led Twitter to add more context to the post as well. Many users also quoted this tweet and claimed that it is fake. One such tweet can be seen below.

Hence, we searched for videos of Lockheed L-1011 Tristar on YouTube. We found that it is a submerged plane in Aqaba, Jordan. It did not crash in the sea but was rather manually submerged to create a scuba-diving destination. Many have done scuba diving in this area and videos of the plane can be found on YouTube. Here is one such video.

We compared the visuals seen in the video with the viral images. There are enough similarities between the plane seen in the video and in the images to suggest that both are the same aircraft. Moreover, MH-370 was a modern aircraft 777-200 ER built by Boeing. Whereas, L-1011 Tristar is an older model built by a different corporation,i.e, Lockheed.

In the comparison above, you can see that the nose seen in the viral images is same as the nose of the L-1011 Tristar plane submerged in Jordan. The same can be seen with the other images as well.

The windows of the aircraft in the images shared in the Facebook post match the windows seen in the videos of Lockheed L-1011 Tristar submerged in Jordan.

You can also see that the seats and the door match as well. Hence, we can see the interior and exterior of the aircraft alleged to be the wreckage of MH-370 matches with the Lockheed L-1011 Tristar aircraft.

Conclusion

From our investigation, it is clear that the images shared as wreckage of MH-370 are actually of a different aircraft, the Lockheed L-1011 Tristar. The remains of Malaysian Airlines flight MH-370 are yet to be found and the mystery of its disappearance yet to be solved.
